To celebrate the first birthday of our foal, our annual gathering in the bluegrass takes on special meaning and at the heart of racing season. See our revised itinerary below, and let's get ready to light a candle.
*Note: subject to change depending on the final headcount.
Horse Country Barn/Farm Tour
Friday Afternoon, April 12th, TBD
We're currently working with Horse Country to finalize a location. The tour will be led by Chris Ransom, and an option for attendees who arrive Thursday night or early Friday. More details to come!
Friday Night, April 12th, 5:30 to 6:15 p.m.
We’ll kick off the weekend with a registration of members at the lobby of the Embassy Suites, where you’ll receive member badges and welcome bags.
Welcome Drinks & Reception
Friday Night, April 12th, 6:30 p.m.
We’ll board the People’s Horse Express Bus and head to local favorite, Winchell's, a lively sports bar run by grads of C.I.A. (Culinary Institute of America), and secretly one of the state's best fried chicken joints. After a toast to kick off the weekend, the feast will begin. (For those who can’t make early registration, you can simply meet us at Winchell's!)
Bus Back to Hotel, 9:30 pm.
After snacks and drinks, we’ll board the bus and head back to the hotel in anticipation for a big day at Taylor Made Farm with our foal.
Saturday, April 13th, 8:30 to 9:30 a.m.
We’ll gather for a complimentary breakfast in the hotel lobby then board the busses for a mid-morning arrival at Taylor Made Farm.
Taylor Made Farm, Arrival.
The trip from the Embassy to Taylor Made is a brief twenty minutes or so, and through the bucolic bluegrass of central Kentucky. We’ll be meeting this year in the breeding barn, where all the magic happens.
Before we break into groups, we’ll pose for our annual group picture, a People’s Horse members tradition, and then check in on our buddy, California Chrome.
Meet You Know Who
After our visit with Chrome, we’ll head over to the Yearling Complex to spend some quality time with The People’s Horse. You’ll have the chance to take pictures with her, and watch her enter the paddock and mingle with her new friends in her bigger pasture at Eagle Creek.
Daddy Joe’s Lunch // Keeneland Excursion
After spending some quality time with the foal, we’ll head back to Daddy Joe’s for a barbecue lunch, drinks and talk with Duncan Taylor about the future of our foal, her prospects for racing, and industry changes. We’ll break and the bus will head to Keeneland for those wanting to catch the day’s last races. Other transportation will be available back to the hotel.
Dinner Reception & Naming Ceremony
Finally, we’ll be selecting the winner of our naming contest - and will hold a special dinner and vote off to pick the winning name. Location TBD
We’ll gather in the hotel lobby for a leisurely breakfast and review any questions or thoughts members might have. For those who have signed up as volunteers (you know who you are!) we’ll break out into teams to review the year ahead.
Featured Speaker: Alan Sherman at Keeneland
After breakfast, we’ll board the bus again and head to Keeneland. At the track kitchen, we'll be greeted by Alan Sherman, trainer of California Chrome, for an extended discussion about the art of training, and how to adjust for horses with disabilities. Those who want to linger afterward to catch a few races can do so, and we'll also be providing a shuttle to the airport, which is just a few miles away. If you’re flight is leaving Sunday night, be sure to place your suitcases on the bus after breakfast.
A few notes
Overall attitude. The People’s Horse is a club that is open, friendly, casual and easy. You won’t need any dinner jackets or shined shoes for this experience, and are welcome to come and go as you please. Want to spend alone time with family and break away? Go for it.
Travel. We have arranged for bus service and transportation the entire weekend and a cost that is factored into the Summit experience. If you wish to use a car service like Uber or Lyft or taxi for activities outside the itinerary, we support you, but the club cannot cover those costs.
Questions. Don’t hesitate to ask. Just send us a note at members [at] peopleshorse.com and we’ll get back to you.
See you at Summit III!
